Food Industry Castors: 5 Inch Swivel PU Wheels for Washdown and Processing Equipment

Food Industry Castors: 5 Inch Swivel PU Wheels for Washdown and Processing Equipment

Walk through any food processing plant, meat packing line, or commercial dishwashing room and you will see the same problem: standard industrial casters rust after a few months of hot-water washdown, the tread picks up grease and debris, and the bracket crevices collect product residue that you cannot rinse out. Buyers in food and beverage do not need a “heavier” caster. They need a caster that survives daily washing, does not shed onto the product line, and can be cleaned in place.

This page is about our EH08-11-125S-402 — a 5 inch swivel caster built around an iron-core polyurethane wheel, 250 kg per wheel, blue-zinc plated bracket. It is the model we ship to European equipment builders that supply washing machines, vegetable processing lines and material carts into the food industry.

Why Food Industry Casters Are Different

A caster on a warehouse cart and a caster on a food processing machine live in two different worlds. The food-side caster faces:

  • Daily hot-water washdown — 60–80°C water, often with alkaline detergents or chlorinated foam.
  • Product contact risk — flaked rubber, nylon dust, or rust chips falling onto the line is a food safety incident.
  • Smooth, non-porous surfaces — bracket crevices and open bearings trap product and cannot be sanitised.
  • Anti-marking floors — epoxy and stainless floor panels must not be scarred or stained by the wheel.

The wrong wheel in this environment fails fast. A plain rubber wheel swells with detergent. A grey nylon wheel sheds fine dust. A plain zinc bracket rusts after three months of washdown. The EH08-11-125S-402 is built around these four constraints.

The Wheel: Iron-Core Polyurethane, Not Rubber or Nylon

Wheel Type On Washdown Floor Product Shedding Floor Marking Verdict for Food
Iron-core PU (this model) Resists alkaline detergents and hot water; does not swell Non-marking, non-shedding tread No black streaks on epoxy Best fit
Plain rubber Swells and softens with oil and detergent Sheds black rubber dust Leaves black marks Avoid
Nylon Fine chemically, but gets brittle in cold bays Sheds fine white dust under load No marking Use only in dry zones
Cast iron / steel Rusts under washdown Rust flakes = contamination risk Scratches epoxy Avoid

Polyurethane does not absorb water, does not shed onto the product line, and rolls quietly on smooth floors. The iron core gives the wheel the dimensional stability a soft PU wheel alone cannot carry at 250 kg per wheel.

Stainless steel bracket version Available on request (same plate layout, 304 stainless)

For food-grade environments where blue zinc is not sufficient, we offer the same bracket in 304 stainless steel. Plate and hole dimensions match the standard EH08 layout. Send your frame drawing for confirmation before tooling.

Bracket and Washdown Considerations

The bracket is where food-industry casters live or die. The EH08 swivel head uses a double ball raceway, which rolls smoothly under load and wipes clean with a hose. The blue zinc plating is standard; for daily chlorinated washdown, move up to the 304 stainless bracket version — it costs more but will not show surface rust after six months.

We do not claim the EH08 is an FDA-listed caster. We are upfront about that. What we can say is: the tread is non-shedding, the bracket cleans in place, and European washing-machine builders have been running this model in the field for years. If your audit requires a certified food-grade polymer tread, tell us the requirement and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it — rather than promising and missing.

Variants in the Same Plate Layout

All four variants below share the same 114 × 100 mm plate, 84 × 71 mm hole pitch and 11 mm bolt holes. You can mix and match on one machine without re-drilling:

Variant Code Brake Best For
Swivel, no brake EH08-11-125S-402 None Equipment that stays in place after loading
Rigid, no brake EH08-11-125R-402 None Directional running on straight tracks
Swivel with total lock EH08-11-125SB-402 Metal double brake (locks wheel and swivel) Carts that must sit still during operation
Swivel with side brake EH08-11-125SC-402 Metal side brake (locks wheel only) Occasional parking, low pedal profile

Where This Model Goes

  • Industrial washing and drying machines — 680–800 kg loaded machines, four casters per unit.
  • Vegetable and fruit processing lines — mobile trolleys between wash stations.
  • Bakery and dough handling carts — non-marking tread on tile floors.
  • Meat and seafood processing trolleys — stainless bracket option for daily chlorinated washdown.
  • Commercial dishwashing conveyor modules — quiet swivel, no floor noise.

Installation — What Your Engineer Needs to Drill

  1. Mark four 11 mm bolt holes on the equipment underside, on an 84 × 71 mm pitch.
  2. The holes sit inside a 114 × 100 mm plate footprint.
  3. Use M10 bolts with washers (the 11 mm hole is clearance for M10 or smaller).
  4. Tighten to a firm torque — do not over-tighten and deform the plate.
  5. For a 680 kg machine, run two swivel (S) at one end and two rigid (R) at the other — this is the standard stable layout and pushes straight.

FAQ

Is this caster FDA or food-contact certified?

We do not market the EH08 as a food-contact-certified caster. The polyurethane tread is non-marking and non-shedding, and European equipment builders run it on washing and processing machines, but if your audit requires a specific FDA or 3A certification, tell us the exact standard and we will confirm whether we can meet it before you order.

Can I get the bracket in stainless steel instead of blue zinc?

Yes. The same EH08 plate layout is available in 304 stainless steel. Plate size, hole pitch and bolt hole match the standard version. Lead time is slightly longer than the blue-zinc catalog item.

How do I choose between S, R, SB and SC?

For a stationary machine that only moves for cleaning: two swivel (S) + two rigid (R). For a mobile cart that must lock in place: two swivel-total-lock (SB) + two rigid. For a cart that only needs occasional wheel braking: use the side-brake (SC) on the swivel end.

What is the lead time for an OEM order?

Stocked SKUs ship within 30 days. Stainless bracket versions and non-standard hole patterns run on a slightly longer lead time, confirmed per order.

Can I order samples before a full container?

Yes. We regularly send 4–8 sample wheels to equipment builders for on-machine testing. Send us your loaded weight and floor type and we will recommend which samples to test.
