Swivel Castor with Brake — 5 Inch Heavy Duty Total Lock PU Caster
You can buy a swivel caster and a rigid caster and build a perfectly good trolley. The moment that trolley has to sit on a ramp, a slope, or next to a machine that vibrates, you find out the hard way: a trolley without brakes rolls when you least expect it. A swivel castor with brake solves this — the wheel swivels freely when you are moving it, and locks solid when you step on the pedal. This page covers our EH08-11-125SB-402, the 5 inch total-lock brake version of our best-selling heavy duty PU caster.
Why a Total-Lock Brake Beats a Side Brake
Not every brake on a caster does the same job. Buyers often ask which one they need, so let us be clear.
| Brake Type | What It Locks | When You Need It |
|---|---|---|
| Total lock (SB) — this model | Locks both the wheel rotation AND the swivel raceway | Trolleys on ramps, loads that must not drift, machines that vibrate while running |
| Side brake / face brake (SC) | Locks the wheel only; the caster can still swivel | Flat-floor carts that need to stay put briefly but still turn while loaded |
| Directional lock (ST) | Locks swivel only; the wheel still rolls | Long straight runs where you want the cart to track straight |
If you are building a trolley that will sit on a slight slope, or a workbench cart that must not walk while a machine runs beside it, you want total lock. The EH08-11-125SB-402 is that caster.

The wheel compound is 95 Shore A polyurethane poured around a cast iron core. It rolls quietly on sealed concrete and epoxy, will not mark the floor, and resists oil and grease. The bracket is stamped from thick steel sheet and plated blue zinc for indoor warehouse use. The brake pedal is steel, not plastic — it is designed to be stepped on with a work boot, not pressed with a finger.
How the Total-Lock Brake Works
When you step the pedal down, two things happen at once: a shoe presses against the tread to stop the wheel from rolling, and a separate locking mechanism engages the swivel raceway so the caster cannot turn. Step the pedal the other way and both release together. There is no need to reach under the cart, no fumbling with a small lever.
On a four-caster trolley, you only need brakes on two diagonally opposed wheels to hold the cart on a typical 2–3 degree slope. Some buyers spec brakes on all four — that is fine, just expect the cart to be harder to nudge when all four are locked.
Typical Applications
- Factory trolleys that sit on loading ramps
- Machine base frames that must not walk while running
- Warehouse order-picking carts that stop on mezzanine edges
- Welding carts and tool cabinets that sit on sloped shop floors
- Medical and laboratory equipment bases that must stay level
Mounting Notes
The 114 x 100 mm mounting plate with 84 x 71 mm hole pitch is a common heavy-duty footprint. If your existing equipment uses a different plate size, we can supply the same wheel on a stem (M) or insert (H) bracket — just ask. The 165 mm mounting height is the distance from the floor to the underside of the mounting plate when the caster is standing upright. Double-check this against your equipment frame before ordering.

FAQ
Q: How many braked casters do I need on a four-wheel trolley?
A: Two diagonally opposed total-lock casters is the standard for most indoor flat-floor trolleys. If the trolley sits on a ramp or a noticeable slope, use four braked casters. Side-brake casters are not enough on a slope — they stop the wheel but the caster can still swivel sideways.
Q: Will this brake hold on a sloped loading dock?
A: The total-lock brake holds the caster stationary on typical warehouse slopes. For steeper dock ramps or outdoor inclines, always chock the wheels as well — no caster brake is a substitute for a wheel chock on a steep grade.
Q: Can I get this caster in stainless steel for washdown areas?
A: Yes. We supply stainless bracket versions for food and pharmaceutical environments. Ask for the stainless bracket code when you send your inquiry.
Q: What is the lead time for EH08-11-125SB-402?
A: Standard lead time is 30 days for container orders. We hold 600+ standard SKUs in stock, so small sample or trial orders ship faster. Send your quantity and destination port for an exact schedule.
Q: Does the brake pedal wear out over time?
A: The pedal and brake shoe are steel and serviceable. Under normal indoor warehouse use the brake mechanism outlasts the polyurethane tread. If the pedal feels soft after years of use, the brake shoe can be replaced without replacing the whole caster.
