Why do polyurethane casters “come loose”? From the separation of the wheel surface and wheel core, understand a common failure problem.

Polyurethane casters are widely used in industrial turnover vehicles, logistics equipment, and production fixtures as they balance wear resistance, load-bearing capacity, and certain ground protection capabilities. However, in long-term use, some casters may experience cracking of the wheel surface, raised edges, and even gradual separation of the polyurethane layer from the wheel core. It is commonly referred to as “debonding” on site. In fact, delamination is not just about material aging, it is often related to the bonding state, load, impact, environmental medium, and usage mode.

1. Where exactly did ‘debonding’ occur?

Rubber coated casters are usually composed of an outer wheel surface and an inner wheel core. Under normal conditions, the two need to maintain a stable combination to ensure smooth transmission of load and rolling forces. When partial separation occurs at the interface, the outer wheel surface may undergo additional deformation during rolling, and then the separation area gradually expands. In the early stages, only small gaps may appear at the edges, which may manifest as obvious warping, bulging, or partial detachment after continued use.

2. Why is frequent start stop more likely to expose problems?

When the equipment is started and braked, the wheel surface not only bears vertical loads, but also experiences forces along the rolling direction. For turnover vehicles, traction trolleys, and production line equipment that frequently start and stop, this repetitive effect will continue to be transmitted to the joint area between the wheel surface and the wheel core. If there is insufficient local bonding or the equipment is in a high load state for a long time, the problem is more likely to gradually manifest. Therefore, when determining the cause of delamination, we cannot only look at the weight of the device, but also at how it moves every day.

3. Ground impact can also accelerate interface forces

Thresholds, floor joints, small steps, and damaged floors can all cause momentary impact on the wheels. When the wheel surface passes over obstacles, local compression and deformation occur, and the force is then transmitted to the wheel core. If the equipment is fast, has a large load, or repeatedly passes through the same obstacle position for a long time, the wheel surface and wheel core will bear more complex cyclic stresses. Improving the running route and controlling the speed through obstacles can sometimes be more effective than simply replacing harder wheels.

4.  Oil stains, cleaning agents, and temperature conditions cannot be ignored

Industrial sites are not always dry, at room temperature, and in a clean environment. Wheels may come into contact with oil, water, cleaning agents, or other media, and may also operate in areas with significant changes in temperature. There are differences in the adaptability of different materials to the environment, and long-term exposure to unsuitable media may affect the condition of the wheel surface or the bonding area. Therefore, when purchasing, it is necessary to proactively indicate whether there are chemical media, wet cleaning, or special temperatures on site, rather than just providing dimensions and load-bearing capacity.

5.  What should be checked when early signs appear?

During daily inspections, it is important to observe whether there are any abnormal gaps, curled edges, bulges, or irregular cracks at the junction of the wheel surface edge and the wheel core; When turning the wheel, pay attention to whether there is obvious deflection or local deformation on the wheel surface. If only minor abnormalities are found, it is not recommended to operate with the disease for a long time. It should be checked together with the equipment load, the status of other wheels, and the on-site route to determine whether it is a single wheel abnormality or a common working condition problem with the entire batch of equipment.

6. Why can’t it be simply attributed to ‘polyurethane is not good’?

Polyurethane is just one material category, and the actual performance of casters is also affected by the formula, wheel core structure, molding process, interface treatment, and usage conditions. Two polyurethane wheels that look similar in appearance do not necessarily mean that their internal structure and applicable working conditions are exactly the same. After delamination occurs, if the reason is only attributed to ‘this material is not durable’, it is easy to miss the real problem, such as exceeding the applicable working conditions, continuous impact, or mismatched environmental media.

7.  How to reduce the risk of delamination during procurement?

Firstly, it is necessary to clarify the total weight of the equipment, the distance traveled per operation, the frequency of movement, and the ground conditions; Next, explain whether there is power traction, frequent emergency stops, or obstacle impact; If there are oil stains, cleaning agents, moisture or temperature changes on site, they should also be provided in advance. For critical equipment, batch configuration can be determined through sample installation and actual route operation observation. The closer the caster selection is to the actual working conditions, the easier it is to control the probability of abnormal failure in the later stage.
