Why do some casters leave black marks on the ground? The problem of ground marks cannot be solely attributed to dirty wheels.

Whether the wheels will leave marks on the ground in scenarios such as warehouses, exhibition halls, hospital logistics, clean rooms, and supermarket distribution is a very practical issue. After some devices are pushed over, there may be black marks, drag marks, or local pollution on the ground, which affects the on-site appearance and increases cleaning costs. Many people’s reactions are ‘the wheels are too dirty’ or ‘the ground is not good’, but the actual reasons are often more complex. Wheel surface materials, ground conditions, loads, dragging methods, and cleaning residues may all be involved.

1. Ground imprint does not equal wheel wear

Leaving marks on the wheels does not necessarily mean that the wheels have been severely worn. Some traces come from slight transfer of wheel surface materials under pressure and friction, some from ground dust being compacted by the wheels, and some are residual manifestations of cleaning agents, oil stains, or wax layers repeatedly crushed. Therefore, when discovering black marks, do not only look at whether the wheel surface is worn thin, but also observe the location, frequency, and on-site environment where the marks appear.

2. The material of the wheel surface will affect the appearance of traces

The contact mode between different wheel surface materials and the ground is different. Some materials may be more prone to color transfer or drag marks when rubbed on specific surfaces; Other materials are more inclined towards ground protection and low trace performance. But the material name itself cannot completely determine the result, as the formula, hardness, surface condition, and usage conditions all affect the actual performance. Just saying ‘wear resistant’ during procurement may not necessarily solve the problem of ground marks.

3. The cleanliness of the ground is also crucial

Many black marks are not caused by the wheels alone, but by the wheels compacting dust, oil stains, or cleaning residues on the ground. Especially for epoxy flooring, PVC flooring, or polished flooring, if there are residual film layers on the surface, the equipment may show more obvious wheel marks after repeated use. At this point, simply replacing the casters may only temporarily improve the situation. To truly solve the problem, it is necessary to check the ground cleaning methods and daily maintenance procedures.

4. Dragging and spinning are more likely to leave marks

When the wheels roll normally, the main contact between the wheel surface and the ground is rolling; But if the device is dragged horizontally, spun sharply, rotated in place, or forcefully pushed after braking, the sliding friction between the wheel surface and the ground will significantly increase. This type of operation is more likely to leave drag marks and also more likely to cause local damage to the wheel surface. For small cars that require frequent steering, a reasonable caster layout and operating habits are equally important.

5. The larger the load, the more pronounced the ground pressure

The same caster exerts different pressure on the ground under light and heavy loads. The heavier the equipment, the higher the contact pressure between the wheel surface and the ground. If rough ground, dust, or frequent turning are added, it is easier to form obvious wheel marks. Therefore, controlling the imprint cannot only rely on the color of the wheel surface, but also needs to be comprehensively judged based on the actual load borne by a single wheel, the width of the wheel surface, the material of the ground, and the frequency of movement.

6.  Clearly state the ‘ground requirements’ when purchasing

If the equipment is used in hospitals, exhibition halls, electronic workshops, or high-end decoration places, the requirements for ground traces, noise, and cleanliness should be clearly stated when purchasing. Suppliers can only recommend wheel surface materials more reasonably by understanding the type of ground used, cleaning method, equipment weight, and movement route. Don’t wait until the wheels are installed and black marks are left on the ground, then turn back and ask why there are no marks.

7. On site investigation can start from three aspects

Check if the traces are concentrated in the turning, braking, or turning position; Secondly, check whether there is dust, oil film, wax layer or residual cleaning agent on the ground; Thirdly, compare the performance of different equipment and wheel materials after passing through the same area. Through these comparisons, it is often possible to determine whether the problem is more inclined towards wheel surface materials, on-site operations, or ground maintenance.
